My reason to choose the
University
of Kyoto is because I would like to
increase my knowledge especially
biotechnology. I have been curious in Biology since I was was in
Elementary school. I really want to be a scientist in Biology. Finally I was
accepted in Agricultural Faculty in the University of Sumatera Utara (USU)
which is one of top 50 universities in Indonesia. I felt
that this department could make my dream came true. During my study in USU , I
often follow the English community because English is an International language
that is used around the world in various events. Additionally, I have been
studying English because I’d like to go abroad. In particular, a country that
really interesting for me is Japan (The sunrise country). When I studied in Agroecotechnology
Department, I obtained experiences as an assistant in teaching laboratories,
i.e. Laboratory of Biotechnology, The Basic of Plant Breeding, and Botany
(Morphology and Taxonomy of Plant), for helping my lectures/Professors. My duty
was supervising the laboratory works for Year One’s and Year Two’s students. I
like this job because I can learn more from the practice about biotechnology,
genetics and plant biology. Moreover, I also
participated in student organization called “Himadita Nursery”,an
enterpreuneurship organization. We provide the plants especially for practice
to the Agricultural students, and also for room or building decoration. I was also a leader of Research and
Development Division for 2 years. We conducted the research about compost
(organic fertilizer), sunflower and lettuce. We improve our members’ skill by
providing them with some training about agriculture, IT (website) and English.
The plants that we provide in this campus are ornamental plants, fruits,
vegetables, plantation and forestry plants. This organization contained with
the students who have been selected by the committee and also controlled by the
lectures in campus. Department of Agroecotechnology consists of four
specialized studies, i.e Plant Breeding, Agronomy, Plant Protection and Soil
science. I chose plant breeding as my specialized study. In this field of study
I learnt a lot about genetics and also biotechnology. my curiosity about DNA,
plant genetics, genetics codes, etc has been answered. However, our department lacks of facilities
and human resources (experts). I’d like to apply this scholarships because I’d
like to improve my skills about the basic of plant breeding and biotechnology,
therefore, I can share my knowledge to other colleagues in the University of
Sumatera Utara.
Plants are one of the organisms in this world that have the
autotrophic characteristics. They can produce the food itself. The plants have
the unique characteristics Including the morphology, taxonomy, andthe molecular
aspects. My dream is being a researcher that has a specialization in ornamental
plant. In the future, I also wish to obtain a PhD. I am interest with the research of professor
Tsukaya about Morning Glory Japanese,
because I conducted experiments for my undergraduate thesis about
ornamental plant. It is about sunflower. I was impressed with the agriculture
of sunflower in Japan. I knew that so many new varieties of sunflower that be
found in Japan. Japan has used sunflower not only for ornamental plant but
also for producing the oil, food, as
well as the phytoremediation plant. which can clean up the contaminated soil
due to the nuclear radiation.
In Japan, USA, China and the European countries (sub
Tropical countries), sunflower can grow easily. However, sunflower cannot grow
optimally in Indonesia known as country
of equator emerald (tropical country) . For the real example:,in my region,
North Sumatra, there is a sunflower seed industry which imported the sunflower
seed from China and has tryied to plant the seed in North Sumatera province
(Sumatera Island)that located in Labuhan Batu District. However, many empty
seed had been found in that location. They thought that it can be resulted by
the climate or genetically from this plants. In contrast, in Blitar district in
East Java (Java Island) the sunflower can growvery well. This case has
encouraged me to study about molecular science, in particular about sunflower
and other ornamental plants in the University of Kyoto.
